CFTW e.V. (Computer for the World) is a registered non-profit, non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Berlin, Germany , whose main objective is to promote the development and use of computing and communication technologies in Africa. Initial focus is on Ghana and its environs. Our major activities include high-level training, consultancy, research and development, systems design and publication of magazines and newsletters.

Aims and Objectives

The aim of the association is to provide young people and specially women in developing countries with better chances to learn about computing and other modern technologies and to enable them to compete on the international job market. Another purpose of the organisation is to minimise the number of people at risk of computer illiteracy, due to the lack of computer knowledge and skills. Activities of the organisation in support of these objectives will include but not be limited to:

• acquiring and supplying used computer equipment to developing countries, schools, community-based training programmes, non-profit organisations, and economically disadvantaged communities
• providing computer equipment set-up and training for facilitators at schools, community-based training programs, non-profit organisations, and economically disadvantaged communities
• providing computer equipment set-up and training for other organisations; providing public seminars and training classes in computer skills; promoting computer literacy to the public at large
• giving people in rural areas access to information on the WWW and setting up local communication centres

How to achieve these Aims

This is done by collecting computers which have been substituted in developed countries but which still operate well. We are interested in second-hand computers like, 486, Pentiums, Modems, and other hardware peripherals, so if you don't really know what to do with your old PC, but still well-functioning PC, give it a useful second life in one of our projects!
